There is no magic formula that enables you to help someone stop—or cut back—on his or her drinking. Alcoholism is a complex problem, with many related issues. But Al‑Anon can help you learn how to cope with the challenges of someone else’s drinking.
It may be that you could help matters by changing some of your own behaviors that make things worse. It may be possible for you to find a healthier way to respond to these challenges. Again, there are no easy answers. But Al‑Anon meetings offer the opportunity to learn from the experiences of others who have faced similar problems.
Some research shows that when problem drinkers enter a recovery program, their chances for success are improved when they are supported by family members who are in a family recovery program such as Al‑Anon.
Whether you are an adult or a teenager, we have shared your story in some way. Whether the Alcoholic in your life is a spouse/partner, or you have a child or parent that suffers from this disease. We even share your pain as a sibling of, grandchild of or friend of an alcoholic.
Anonymity? Please know you are safe with us. One of the Al-Anon/Alateen program’s basic principles is that of anonymity. Meetings are confidential, and we do not disclose whom we see or what we hear at meetings to anyone.

The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.
Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for mem- bership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions.
Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

Al-Anon groups are supported by San Antonio Al-Anon Information Services. The role of “SAAIS”, through public outreach, is to educate and inform the public of the support families and friends can find in the rooms of Al-Anon.
Teens, ages 13-19 years, come together to share experiences to find effective ways to cope with problems. Meetings are for and directed by teen members, with adult supervision.
Alateen is part of Al-Anon, dedicated to providing a “safe and private” place for teenagers to share what’s happening in their lives.
